What is a B Corp?
B Lab is the leading organisation certifying B Corporations, or B Corps, who meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
The B Corp global movement started back in 2015, with the hopes of creating a community of businesses as a force for good. The concept took off with businesses across the world and as of 2022, there are over 1000 certified B Corps across the UK, and nearly 6000 worldwide. Closer to home, a growing number of companies in the north and south of Ireland have now earned the prestigious title including Armagh-based bag company and social enterprise Madlug, and clean energy partner UrbanVolt.
During the rigorous application process, B Lab measures the business’ entire social and environmental performance. After answering hundreds of questions, completing an interview, and validating claims through supporting documentation, those with an Overall B Impact Score of over 80 out of a possible 200 points qualify for the certification. To cement their commitment, certified BCorps must sign a legal agreement and continue to be verified by B Lab every 3 years.
Why B Corp?
For DELI LITES, officially becoming a B Corp provides confirmation that we are meeting the high standards of social and environmental performance that we constantly strive for and encourage throughout the business. It means being part of a wide network of like-minded organisations that prioritise people and positive change alongside profit.
While our journey towards B Corporation certification technically started in June 2021, we’ve been building up to this moment since 1998. From the very beginning we have embraced doing things differently, on a mission to improve the lives of our people, community and the world we live in.
If you are considering applying to become a Certified B Corporation, while it can be a financially and labour intensive process, we would highly recommend it.
